Lake Elsinore Algae Bloom

Lake Elsinore was closed for a week due to a toxic algae bloom, which turned the lake bright green. Warm temperatures have created a perfect environment for the blue-green algae, which produces many toxic substances as it dies off, which can cause rashes to gastrointestinal problems in humans and can be life threatening to animals. Even though it looks like the toxicity levels are going down, officials are still advising to avoid contact with the water and keep pets and livestock far away from the lake. Lake Elsinore is Southern California's largest freshwater non-manmade body of water, but due to the drought, is very shallow and only about 15-feet deep.
